Pre-Wax Protocol

In the last blog we started a journey to show you, through various articles, what can improve the waxing result and make it more profitable for the beauty salon.

I want to change your perspective and show you the many facets behind what we trivially call waxing but which, at the end of this journey, I am sure you will change on your lists to Epilation Treatment. 

THE PRE-HAIR REMOVAL PROTOCOL HERE'S HOW TO DO IT

STEP 1 – CLEANSING
Every treatment must begin with pre-hair removal because the rule is that one must work on perfectly cleansed skin.

This will allow us to minimise annoying irritation, or in extreme cases folliculitis, at the end of the treatment. In this way, your client’s experience before, during and after the treatment will certainly be more pleasant.

It is applied directly on the skin, perhaps with the help of a practical disposable TNT, gently ‘combing’ the hair in the opposite direction to its natural direction of growth so as to detach the hair from the skin in the best possible way, favouring its incorporation.

This small step is really fundamental for the success of the treatment because in doing so you will be analysing your/your client’s skin well, paying particular attention to having removed any form of residue left on the skin following the application of moisturising cream, oils or make-up, especially in the facial area.

Should there be a lot of residue, the advice is to carry out a thorough cleansing, perhaps applying a greater quantity of pre-wax directly with your hands, strictly protected by a nitrile glove, with your fingers slightly moistened with water at first and then concluding the cleansing with a TNT, also slightly moistened.

This last particular action, assisted by the use of the right product, will allow you to achieve an impeccable result.

STEP 2 - DRYING

It goes without saying that cleansing will leave the skin, yes perfectly cleansed, but slightly damp, especially in the summertime in certain areas such as the groin and armpits.

At this point it will be sufficient to apply an absorbent powder to blot and remove excess moisture.

Here too you will need the right absorbent powder. The classic talcum powder* that we can also find in the supermarket is not suitable for an epilation treatment because the size of the individual grains, and therefore of the powder, is too fine.

Therefore, applying a product that is too fine will create a film over the follicles, obstructing the passage and preventing the wax or sugarpaste from taking up the hair.

* Speaking of talcum powder, we could open an interesting parenthesis given the many words spoken at its expense, especially the fact that it appears to be carcinogenic, and specifically facilitates the formation of ovarian and lung tumours if inhaled.  

It is necessary to know that this news was made public because many of the mines from which talcum powder is extracted are located near asbestos deposits. 

While this news is true, it is also true that the production and sale of talcum powder contaminated with asbestos is strictly forbidden on the market, especially in the EU where controls are very strict.

SCIENTIFIC STUDIES

In spite of this, science has spoken out on the matter, saying that as the AIRC Foundation for Cancer Research explains, the main studies on the subject have shown no correlation, although research considered to be ‘non-rigorous’ has found a small increase in risk.

The ‘non-rigorous’ studies are those of the ‘case-control’ type, where data are collected through questionnaires and interviews based on the participants’ memories of using talcum powder years earlier: as memory can be fickle and swaying, researchers are aware that the results of such research are unreliable.

OTHER RESEARCH

On the other hand, so-called cohort studies, which recruit and follow a group of healthy women over time, are considered more reliable: these have generally not found a significant increase in risk. 

On the side of studies conducted on lung problems following talcum powder inhalation, again no increased risk was found.

The only people to whom an increased risk of cancer can be attributed are miners, but once again the cause is not the talcum powder itself, but the presence of other minerals present underground where mining takes place.
